Es imposible decir en dos palabras quién era la persona a la que pertenecía la voz que pueden escuchar en la grabación que sigue: Mirra Alfassa, francesa, pintora, mística, discípula de Sri Aurobindo y directora del ashram que Aurobindo fundó en Pondicherry, en la India colonial francesa. Tampoco es fácil decir por qué, considerando mi impermeabilidad (¿será así?) a los avances religiosos, encuentro esta ejecución tan fascinante. No es difícil, en cambio, enterarse de los eventos principales en la vida del personaje: en Wikipedia, por ejemplo, donde se explica por qué la llamaban “la Madre” (o “la Madre Divina”). Como las imperfecciones de la grabación, la modalidad de murmullo característico de Mirra, las irregularidades de su inglés y las intervenciones que tuve que agregarle la vuelven a veces inteligible, aquí va la transcripción (primero traducida: más adelante pueden encontrar el original):

Ya ven, en la presente condición del mundo las circunstancias son siempre difíciles. El mundo entero está en una condición de lucha, de conflicto entre las fuerzas de la verdad y la luz que quieren manifestarse y la oposición de todo lo que no quiere cambiar y representa lo que está fijo en el pasado, es rígido y se rehúsa a partir. Naturalmente, cada individuo siente sus propias dificultades y confronta los mismos obstáculos. Hay solamente un camino para ustedes. Es la renuncia total, completa e incondicional. No me refiero solamente a abandonar las propias acciones, trabajos, ambiciones, sino también todos los propios sentimientos, en el sentido de que todo lo que hagan, todo lo que sean, exista exclusivamente para lo Divino. De ese modo sienten por encima de las reacciones humanas que los rodean. No solo por encima de ellas sino protegidas de ellas por un muro de Gracia Divina. Una vez que ya no tengan más deseos, más apegos, una vez que hayan abandonado toda necesidad de recibir una recompensa de los seres humanos, no importa quiénes sean, y sepan que la única recompensa que vale la pena obtener es la que proviene del Supremo. Y eso nunca falla. Una vez que hayan abandonado el apego a los seres y las cosas exteriores, sentirán inmediatamente en el corazón esta presencia, esta fuerza, esta gracias que están siempre con ustedes. No hay otra medicina. Es la única medicina para todo, sin excepción. Y para todos los que sufren hay que decir lo mismo. Todo sufrimiento es el signo de que la renuncia no es total. Cuando sientan en ustedes un ‘bang’, así, en lugar de decir ‘Oh, esto es malo’ o ‘Esta circunstancia es difícil’, dicen: ‘Mi renuncia no es perfecta’. Y entonces sienten la gracia que los ayuda y los orienta y así siguen. Y un día emergen en la paz que nada puede perturbar. Responder a todas las fuerzas contrarias, los contrarios movimientos (los ataques, los malentendidos, la mala voluntad) con la misma sonrisa que viene de la confianza plena en la Gracia Divina. Y esta es la única salida, no hay otra. El mundo es un mundo de conflicto, sufrimiento, dificultades y tensiones. Esta hecho de esto. Todavía no ha cambiado. Va a pasar tiempo hasta que cambie y para cada uno hay una posibilidad de salir. Si se recuestan en la presencia de la Gracia Suprema, esa es la única salida.

It is impossible to say in two words who was the person to whom the voice in the recording belongs: Mirra Alfassa, French, a painter and a mystic, a disciple of Sri Aurobindo and the director of the ashram that Aurobindo founded in Pondicherry, in a region of India that was a French colony. It isn’t easy either to say why, given that I’m so impervious (or so I believe) to religion, I find this performance so compelling. It is not difficult, instead, to find information on the life of the character: in Wikipedia, for example, where it is explained why she was called “the Mother” (or “the Divine Mother”). Because the many imperfections of the recording, the mumbling modality characteristic of Mirra, the irregularities of her English and the interventions that I had to add make the text occasionally unintelligible, here’s the transcription:

You see, in the present condition of the world, circumstances are always difficult. The whole world is in a condition of strife, conflict between the forces of truth and light wanting to manifest and the opposition of all that doesn’t want to change which represent in the past what is fixed, hardened and refuses to go. Naturally, each individual feels his own difficulties and is faced by the same obstacles. There is only one way for you. It is a total, complete and unconditional surrender. What I mean by that is giving up not only of one’s actions, work, ambitions, but also of all one’s feelings, in the sense that all what you do, all what you are, is exclusively for the Divine. So, you feel above the human surrounding reactions. Not only above them but protected from them by the wall of the Divine’s Grace. Once you have no more desires, no more attachments, once you have given up all necessity of receiving a reward from the human beings whoever they are and knowing that the only reward that is worth getting is that one that comes from the Supreme. And that never fails. Once you give up the attachment of all the exterior beings and things, you at once feel in your heart this presence, this force, this grace, that is always with you. And there is no other remedy. It’s the only remedy for everybody without exception. All those who suffer, it’s the same thing that has to be said. All suffering is the sign that the surrender is not total. Then, when you feel in you a ‘bang’ like that, instead of saying, ‘Oh this one is bad’, or ‘This circumstance is difficult’, you say, ‘My surrender is not perfect’. And then you feel the grace that helps you and leads you and you go on. And one day you emerge in that peace that nothing can trouble. You answer to all the contrary forces, the contrary movements – the attacks, the misunderstandings, the bad wills – with the same smile that comes from full confidence in the Divine’s Grace. And that is the only way out, there is none else. This world is a world of conflict, suffering, difficulties, and strains. It is made of it. It has not yet changed. It will take some time before changing and for each one there is a possibility of getting out. If you lean back on the presence of the Supreme Grace, that is the only way out.
